Program overview

Want to go whale and dolphin watching in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Want to volunteer with whales and dolphins? Want to make sure it’s done ethically? Our whale and dolphin conservation program, based on the warm-weathered island of Tenerife, might be the program for you.

Tenerife is only about three to five hours from most major European locations. It’s also one of the top locations for whale and dolphin watching. Between 20 and 28 species can be spotted here. Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins can be seen on most days, all year round. If you’re lucky, you could also catch sight of other species, such as Atlantic spotted dolphins, common dolphins, Bryde’s whales and killer whales.

Understandably, a popular activity for Tenerife tourists is whale and dolphin watching. But unsustainable tourism practices now threaten these species. These species are threatened by more than unsustainable tourism practices. As a result, many species of whales and dolphins are listed as endangered, vulnerable or near threatened. But, several are also classified as data deficient, meaning that information about their populations is lacking.

You’ll help to change this. Part of your role will be to spend time on a boat with other international volunteers and observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll take photographs and record their numbers and behaviours. You’ll also spend time on local beaches, where you’ll help to clean them and record environmental factors that might affect the health of marine life.

The information you collect will be used by local organisations to make decisions about setting and enforcing environmental policies. It will also be used by local and international organisations to learn about the long-term effects of threats to whale and dolphin conservation and other marine species.

Please note that this is not a diving program, although you can go for a recreational dive during your free time.

I enjoyed my trip with GVI to Tenerife. I was here for four weeks, which was a perfect period for me. I got to grips with the processes and was able to actively help with activities. I particularly enjoyed the boat trips. I not only had the opportunity to see whales and dolphins, but also to work with them. The park cleaning was also surprisingly a lot of fun, as you were rewarded with the sight of a clean park at the end. I definitely had a great time here! Thank you very much!

My two weeks of volunteering with GVI in Tenerife has come to an end, and it’s been an incredible experience! I loved every moment—meeting amazing people from around the world, heading out on the boat to observe pilot whales, and identifying their fins back at base. Spotting loggerhead sea turtles and Atlantic spotted dolphins was also a highlight! If you’re passionate about marine conservation and want to volunteer abroad, I highly recommend giving this a look!

When I first heard about GVI I was very skeptical about signing up, through research and lots of persuasion from friends and family I finally decided to follow through with it and start my journey. After being here for 2 weeks I don’t regret my decision at all and would love to and plan to volunteer again with GVI. The people, work, experience and overall environment was amazing. I’m happy to be considered a part of GVI family and plan to continue this endeavour.

My experience in Tenerife was fin-credible and something that has changed my life for the better. As someone who wants to work in conservation after completing my masters, GVI Tenerife was another educational and inspiring project for me to do, furthering this idea. I cannot wait to undertake another project with GVI (or come back to Tenerife). The time spent on the boat was an aspect of field work I've not experienced before and I loved the data collection and analysis! The team is incredible and make you feel right at home, I've made some incredible memories and friends from this trip and wish I could stay longer! Ale is an absolute legend and boss, she flies round the boat giving us so much info, she's a mad chef too and has put up with my shocking jokes and I'm so glad she didn't sacrifice me to Poseidon! Big love to Ale, Woj and Tiny, their knowledge and expertise makes this project FIN-sane!!!

My 18 year old daughter had an incredible time in Tenerife for the whale and dolphin program as part of her gap program. She was at the program for 4 weeks. She immediately felt welcomed by the staff and other participants. She felt the accommodations were very clean, nice and she felt safe in the gated community. The pool was an added plus. She feels she gained independence, responsibility and confidence that she can do things on her own.My daughter has a passion for whales/dolphin/ocean but isn't considering a career in it. She loved being the observer on the boat, seeing the beautiful whales/dolphins and then helping to identify them in Fin ID in the afternoon at boat days. She has attended another GAP program where she didn't have a great experience and we are so thankful that we invested a little more money for the GVI program. She truly grew as a person and had the most amazing experience. She is already considering where she is going to go next year with GVI. Thank you so much to the Team in Tenerife for leading such an amazing program!

The days were varied with different activities, 3 mornings out on the boat spotting cetaceans, then back to base for lunch and entering the data gathered and trying to match the fins to the catalogue. One morning doing a beach clean and logging what we collected, an afternoon tracking all the birds seen in the park and then recording the data and another morning logging all the boats and other vessels going out of the harbour, together with their speed. Expect early starts and plenty of walking. The food was basic but good and there was enough of it. The staff and other participants were very welcoming and the staff could not have been anymore helpful and organised. Because we went as a couple and we ate in our 60 we took the option of paying a supplement to have our own accommodation 5 mins walk away from base camp which was completely adequate. Due to the day job back home we were only there for a week, it went by in a flash. Go for as long as you can

An eye opening and truly memorable experience with GVI, their programs are inspirational which every human on the planet should join even for a few days, although a few weeks would benefit our fragile lands and seas greatly and the creatures that live on/in them. Thank you GVI and their dedicated teams for the truly remarkable work you all do, I can’t wait to join you all again soon.

A fun, interesting and knowledge-gaining experience, but is hard work, especially If you need to adjust to the heat in summer. But it is definitely worth it. There are some gorgeous places to visit. Cared for well by the staff. A real insight into conservation efforts. It's a great way to meet lots of different people from around the world if you're lucky enough to meet many people.

I chose to volunteer with GVI in Tenerife because of my deep interest in marine biology and my commitment to contributing to the conservation of marine life. From the very beginning, I was impressed by the staff members who were not only highly knowledgeable and professional but also incredibly supportive. Their guidance and enthusiasm created a welcoming environment that made learning both enjoyable and impactful. This program has been a significant step forward in my journey towards a career in marine conservation. Gaining hands-on experience with data collection and fin identification, has equipped me with practical skills that will undoubtedly enhance my CV and future career prospects. Additionally, the experience helped me grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated—I became more comfortable speaking English and more confident in communicating with others, which was a personal hurdle I had struggled with for quite some time.Reflecting on my time with GVI, I can genuinely say it was the best two weeks of my life. Every moment, whether on the water, gathering data, or connecting with passionate, like-minded people, made the experience unforgettable. I also developed a deeper understanding of the threats facing cetaceans and the measures needed to protect them. This program was more than just a learning opportunity; it was an inspiring and life-changing experience that will always hold a special place in my heart.

I did two weeks of volunteering in Tenerife and it was an incredible experience. I met so many great people and Ale and the other staff were always accessible which made the whole process of getting to the base and the program go really smoothly. I went into my trip not knowing a lot about marine biology and came out learning so much from the staff and other participants and seeing so many cool animals up close! Some highlights were seeing a pilot whale swim right up and interact with the boat, seeing a Bryde’s whale and on my last boat day a pod of common dolphins swam right up at the front of our boat which was so surreal. Really going to miss my time there!

Truly a life changing experience, would 100% recommend to absolutely everyone and I will definitely be spending more time with GVI in future. It has been an absolute blast and I cannot wait for my next adventure. Couldn't have asked for more. Great people running the program who I aspire to be more like every day I spend with them. I literally can't put into words how amazingly unique and enjoyable of a time it has been.

My 1 and a half months were truly amazing, so much so that I’ve decided to undergo another program with gvi, the team was so helpful and lovely. Tenerife’s base was beautiful and we have so much time to explore and make lasting friendships. The program itself was so insightful into the inner workings of marine biology and conservation and we genuinely were making a difference!

Same as before woo! I absolutely loved GVI Tenerife and the programme. It has been incredibly inspiring, impactful and educational. I also think that Ale was a very good host who instilled discipline in the right way - with a friendly casual approach. It was also so heart-warming to see that the cat has such a good home and is treated so well (keep treating Tiny like the king that he is!!). Would 100% do GVI again and will definitely recommend!!

My time with GVI in Tenerife was amazing! The balance between work and fun was just right. The daily routine was a great mix of conservation efforts, chores to support daily living and free time for relaxing, shopping and socializing. Everyone was very respectful of each other and inclusive to all participants. I would highly recommend this program to other interested parties.

I've loved cetaceans since I was a child, but I initially had a different career orientation. I worked in my profession for a few years and realized that I was missing something. But starting over at my age? In order to find my way, I applied for a traineeship at GVI. In the whale and dolphin project, I got a first insight into the research. Ale, our staff, introduced us to the tasks step by step so that I felt challenged, but never overwhelmed. In addition, I have also developed a new understanding of what noise pollution the numerous boats pose to marine life and what dangers they pose, as well as other human impacts on our seas/ planet.Ale is very tough, very nice, and kept an eye on every single one. Everywhere! And showed us how to make typical Spanish Food, helped us with questions, etc. She is really great. In addition to our land surveys at the Harbour and the trips on the water, we also cleaned up the park and beach. After just one week, this ensured that I noticed garbage much more clearly (it still persists at home). As well as the advice on saving energy and water, etc. I thought I was saving energy, but I have now gained a new awareness.I had the feeling that I was doing something meaningful and important in the project and that encouraged me.The GVI project has not only made suggestions but has consistently and actively pursued goals. This may have been an adjustment at first, because we were constantly reminded of it, but it signaled to all of us that each of us can make a difference in everyday life, even on a small scale.  The project has confirmed me in my new professional path and I would like to come back for an internship.

It was a great experience to understand the sort of work being done to help conserve the animals involved. It also gives an insight on the sort of things you will be doing if you decide to work in this field in the future. Because everyone is working toward the same cause and we are living together it feels like a genuine family.

A very good program, perfect for someone who really cares about the environment. You can help out in so many ways, from data collection about marine animals to picking up litter along the beach and in parks, it's a great opportunity to play your part for the world we live in, and to help the animals that really need our help - especially because humans have caused them so many of the problems we're trying to alleviate in the first place. You also get the opportunity to live in a beautiful place with plenty of heat and plenty of potential activities and excursions you can plan for the weekends, which is definitely a bonus! The only thing I'd warn about is that it can become very stressful as an introvert, as you'll be sharing a room and living spaces with a lot of people for an extended period of time. I did find I struggled with this a lot while on the course, but I really enjoyed all of the activities, especially boat days, where it was so special when you found the marine animals. Overall it was a very positive experience!!!

Volunteering with GVI is the most wonderful experience that any of you will ever have, I’ve volunteered in Tenerife with GVI Canary Islands Tenerife for 2 weeks and I’m having a wonderful time with GVI by going on boat trips with dolphins and whales and the staff and the volunteers here are very friendly, I’d highly recommend it for everyone who wants to volunteer with marine mammals 🐬🐳 I’ve get to do fin IDs and surveys on the boat which I really enjoyed and you will learn lots of new skills during the program which is worth it

It was the best two weeks of my life,I had the opportunity to finally see the dolphins for the first time in my life and got to observe them and do the fin IDs which was amazing, I would highly GVI for everyone who loves animals and the staff, the interns and the volunteers were very friendly. It was the best experience of my life and I would go back to Tenerife maybe next year but longer than 2 weeks since I’ve enjoyed it too much.

Absolutely life changing. It made me realise how much we affect the world around us and made me so much more passionate about what I want to do in my life. Really put the alot into perspective for me. The people I met were incredible. The staff members were like family. So friendly and kind and always there to help. Ale especially was always ready to listen and help if you were feeling down. If I could have spent more time on this programme I would have, it really is a shame to come back home. But I have come back home a different person thanks to GVI.

I’ve had the best 6 weeks with GVI Tenerife. I was originally booked on for 4 weeks so the fact I extended while I was there showed just how much I enjoyed my experience. Base is like a family and the staff were worth their weight in gold. We went out on the boat 3 times a week and I had some incredible sightings over my time there. On the boat we were taught how to record data and then once we were back on base we would process it and identify the different pilot whales we saw. On other days as a volunteer I did land surveys and park/beach clean as well as watching informative documentaries on conservation. We also had a lot of free time where we could go to the shops, beach, pool or explore other parts of the island.

I am currently participating in the marine conservation programm in Tenerife and have already had many amazing experiences. Even though I am only staying here for two weeks, I'm learning a lot about whales and dolphins, how to collect data about them and how to identify individuals. The boat days are amazing and you can see pilot whales and other dolphins on every trip. When we are not on the boats, we do beach cleans, land surveys or enter the collected data. On hot days the work can be exhausting but in the end it is all worth it. I would recommend this programm to everyone who wants to make an impact and take part in helping marine wildlife.

I’m Seanna here from Australia - I’m currently a Uni student and I went to the Canary Islands Whale and Dolphin Conservation GVI Program.I chose to go to GVI during my gap year in October of 2022, to travel in a more sustainable and practical and my experience was absolutely incredible.GVI really impacted my awareness of some of the issues of conservation in this area and I feel like I really made a difference with conservation through this program. Living in Australia there is of course lots of tourism stemming from our wildlife and beaches - yet being right there and actually contributing towards a project was amazing to be a part of and see first hand. Not only was the area itself gorgeous, and the program gave me the chance to see some incredible Whales and Dolphins, it also opened my mind to lots of different cultures and helped me develop some more soft skills. Sharing a house with people from all around the world I feel like I learned so much more about the world and different cultures than I was expecting and definitely have quite a few new countries on my bucket list. The GVI staff was so supportive along the way for me - it was my first ever trip abroad and my 2nd flight and I am super grateful that I had someone always there to answer questions, and such a big list of resources to make sure that I was doing everything correctly. I experienced quite a few issues - flights canceled, missing baggage, stolen items, redirected to the wrong airport - and I am just really grateful that I had someone there to help me all along the way, someone that spoke the language and was willing to help with anything. My advice would definitely be to go in with an open mind, I learned so much about myself and how I am in new environments, far from home and wish that everyone could have that experience. But you need to be open to it, and actively seek it sometimes.I myself will certainly be returning - I am just about to book a trip to Thailand in January 2024 which I am very much looking forward to.

So many young people dream about this kind of experience! Very few actually do it, be that due to fear or ignorance or anything else - and since doing it, I've had countless people ask how and where and how can they join too. It couldn't be easier with GVI, and what an example of how worth it it really is! From inquiry to payment you are guided by the team through the phone, and then from airport to airport you have understanding, knowledgeable contacts to make the process smooth. And once here? It is only heaven. As my first solo experience out of my country, I couldn't have asked for a better introduction: to the field of study, to travelling, to Tenerife, to living communally, to respect and hard work and common interest and above all, FUN! The most fun I've ever had! Every boat trip beheld spectacles: turtles cruising metres from the boat, baby pilot whales dancing and playing, hundreds of spotted dolphins racing us..... Dreams upon dreams coming true. You live amongst young people and professionals, all as excited and generous as you. Even though I was only a volunteer, from my first boat trip the programme officer Lou noticed I had a particular interest in birds and proceeded to take photos of them every day, just for me. It is that generous effort that gives you faith in yourself, I feel; I'm worth her time and effort, so I can do this! My life feels utterly changed; I'm ready to begin my career, and with the contacts I now have? I know exactly how to do it.In the review that was internal for GVI, I mentioned Ale, the programme lead, instead, because both were outstanding.

At GVI Tenerife you will be met by a very friendly, welcoming & organised team run by Ale who will make sure your experience is a positive, safe & happy one. I learnt many new survey skills whilst on Cetacean Surveys & Land boat surveys, both of which I hope maybe transferable for volunteer work in the UK when I get home. Whilst helping with local beach & park cleans you will be helping towards less ocean pollution. Weekends are free to explore & there are plenty of nearby interesting hikes, with opportunities for birding & photography along with water sports. I am a senior participant but found the company & other volunteers very inclusive. If it is in your mind to do such things, my advice would be Just Do It. The planet & Wildlife needs more helpers. You won’t know unless you try & it could be the start of a new passion. 🌎💚

It was an absolutely incredible experience and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.I’ve met some amazing people who will be friends for life and I’ve made some incredible memories. All the staff were so understanding and supportive and they created a comfortable and encouraging atmosphere for us to get as involved as possible in the programme and the work we were doing, but also to have fun at the same time!

I don't think many people get to experience what I have from being here with you all; if they do, I bet they weren't lucky enough to have it happen so early in life. With your help, I have a path now! A path for my future that I'm DESPERATE to chase! And not only do you let us right into your work here - work that I LOVE more than anything I've known before - you have illuminated the path I can follow to get to it myself. The advice given to me by those I've met - some just starting out, some like the stunningly accomplished programme lead Ale - is invaluable. She has particularly inspired me through her knowledge and passion (on the very first boat trip she stood barefoot on the boat edge, yelling out pilot whales by name and I've never wanted to be anyone more!), and that is equaled by her kindness and consideration toward her participants; in her words, conservation these days is as much about that as the animals themselves. Changing the world for the better requires as much communication, compassion, patience and commitment toward each other as sitting on boats taking photos of fins. Not only do I feel I have an ambition and a passion now, I also feel hopeful for the state of things. With people like her but all the rest of you just as much, there's a glimmer of light! There's so much more I could say, but I think I'll leave it there! This place is everything young people like me need. Thank you all so much!

I chose to participate in Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Tenerife for 4 weeks with GVI during my Gap Year and will never forget the amazing memories I have made. The program included three boat trips a week and there was never a day when we didn't have a sighting. During my time here I have seen Pilot Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Common Dolphins, and Spotted Dolphins all in close proximity. On the other two weekdays, we completed land surveys, in which we would spend time recording data on the different types of boats out at sea, and Beach or Park cleans, which were extremely rewarding when counting all the litter and calculating our total mass of litter collected. The staff were always accommodating and friendly to participants and ensured that everyone was included in group activities. Overall, I wish that I could have stayed a lot longer than 4 weeks as I thoroughly enjoyed everything about my time in Tenerife and made such amazing friends.

I had an amazing experience and highly recommend GVI to anyone interested in volunteering and traveling. The base manager and staff were passionate and dedicated to the work and provided a safe and comfortable experience. I feel good about the work the team is doing in Tenerife and I would absolutely go on another adventure with GVI.

I had an amazing week with GVI in Tenerife in the Canary Islands! I loved being able to work with pilot whales, dolphins, and turtles as well as learn about data entry and behavioral coding for marine mammals. Everyone I met was extremely nice and I wish I was able to stay longer! I definitely recommend joining this base if you have the opportunity to do so!

The support and help was so much more than I was expecting, and I am forever grateful for it!! I couldn't recommend it enough, everything was so thought out and I was guided through every step of the way and of course the boat trips and chance to experience the Whales and Dolphins was so extraordinary I don't think I'll every forget it!

I spent 2 weeks on the Whale and Dolphin Marine Conservation Program in Tenerife in the hope of making the most of my last summer before I started looking for a job. I had heard about the incredible experience my friends had had on their GVI programs, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my last summer of freedom than joining one of the conservation projects myself. It was the first time I had travelled abroad alone, and I was nervous as to how well I would cope with being so far away from home. However, I couldn’t have felt more at home than I did. The staff were always available to talk to and help with any concerns I had. They also made sure everyone kept the base clean and tidy which, after living in student housing of varying cleanliness for the past few years, I was very grateful for. As for living with the other volunteers, everyone was so welcoming that within a few days I was already dreading the day I had to go home. One thing I did, however, wish was different was how repetitive the weekly schedule was. I think if I had stayed significantly longer, I would have really struggled with this. However, I am fully aware that to create the large, reliable datasets needed for the project, repetitive data collection is needed. Even with this, I LOVED my time at the GVI Canary Islands base and I am already considering joining another of the bases on one of the people-based projects.

It was good overall. We had so much fun, we laughed a lot, I was able to practice my English and meet so many people, it was great to experience living with so many people in the same house and becoming friends with them. Going whale watching almost every day has no price and it was awesome 😎

This program helped me a lot to improve my communicative skills. I learned a lot about sightings of whales, dolphins and turtles! I enjoyed meeting new people with different cultures and of course watch little fins on the water. Amazing experience for people who loves the oceans.

I am very happy with the program and the time I spent during it. The work was fulfilling and hands on, and I was able to learn a lot of new skills and have a greater understanding of marine biology, especially with cetaceans. The team was very welcoming, and I have certainly made many life long friends on the program. One thing I took issue with was the housing set up and communication regarding it. Until I arrived on the island I was unaware of where I would be staying. I did not enjoy being separate from the other members, and the frequent moving became a bit hectic. While I was willing to adapt, I can see other future volunteers being deterred from the management.Otherwise I believe this program was a great way for me to begin my volunteering career. The work was both rewarding and exhilirating. I appreciated the fact that I was able to not only join in on the main work, but also create a new niche involving filmmaking for the trip. This flexibility helped me get the most out of the experience. I would definitely recommend this program, and am very happy with the time spent here.

I have only been here for a week and have learned such a lot in a short space of time however I would recommend a month as a minimum as you'd learn so much more. Also at the end of my magical week, I did not want to leave! The team is great and the GVI base is very cozy. I would recommend to anyone who is interested in marine conservation or cetaceans - sightings every time we went on the boat! It's been incredible.

I went to Tenerife for a month to take part in GVI’s whale and dolphin conservation project. I learned so much about marine conservation and these amazing animals and the threats that they face. The program is inspiring and fun and it barely feels like work because you enjoy it so much. It’s really easy to settle in when you’re surrounded by people who also care about the environment and conservation. Definitely recommend!

My name is Gillian Muller and I am from the USA. I volunteered for GVI's Marine Conservation Research program in Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain for 7 weeks. Joining GVI was some of the best weeks I have had so far in my life. Some of the best parts were going out on the boats to collect data and mainly seeing short-finned pilot whales, once in a while seeing dolphins and the excitement of spotting a sea turtle. The staff were helpful and always there for support, and the other volunteers were great I miss them very much. My decision to join this program was because I wanted to further explore my likes and dislikes, and I was interested in volunteering abroad plus I love the ocean, so I chose to volunteer for a marine conservation program.
